On Display

The “geometry gallery” in our ThinkSpace exhibit features changing displays of natural and handcrafted objects that provide strong visual representations of spatial thinking, which is fundamental to innovation and scientific creativity.

Discover the newest installation, 3D models and 2D tessellation patterns from the Arthur Loeb Design Science Teaching Collection at the RISD Nature Lab. These materials are used as teaching tools to illustrate some of the principles of pattern, symmetry and structure found in nature and the built environment.

Many thanks to our colleagues at the RISD Nature Lab for loaning these objects, which will be on display through June.

On Display: Salley Mavor’s "Wee World"

New in our ThinkSpace exhibit, discover an installation of intricate illustrations in fabric relief collage plus three-dimensional dolls and houses created by artist Salley Mavor of Wee Folk Studio, illustrator of more than a dozen exquisite books.

The ThinkSpace “geometry gallery” features displays of objects that provide different representations of spatial thinking in everyday life and the designed environment.  In creating her illustrations, Salley starts in 2-D with simple sketches and layouts before moving to 3-D to sew and incorporate various materials, including fabrics and natural and handmade objects.  The finished 3-D fabric reliefs are then photographed and printed in her books in 2-D.

“I have had a life-long fascination with little things and needlework and rediscovered my childhood delight in sewing and creating miniature scenes while studying illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design.  Manipulating materials in my hands with a needle and thread was so much more satisfying than rendering with a pencil or brush.  I found that I could communicate my ideas more clearly and that my hands would direct me in a compelling way... I create narrative scenes in relief, much like miniature, shallow stage sets, with figures imposed on embellished fabric backgrounds.  My work is decorative and detailed, full of patterns from nature and found objects, all stitched by hand with a needle and thread.”

The display will be on view through early January, and visitors can also browse one of Salley’s beautiful books nearby – “Pocketful of Posies: A Treasury of Nursery Rhymes.”  Inspired by the installation, families can craft their own fairy houses from natural and found objects on June 4 & 5 and make “pocket fairies” from fabric and other materials on July 7; see our calendar of activities for details.

Though Salley is a Cape Code resident and RISD graduate, this is the first time her incredible work has been displayed in Rhode Island – but it’s not the last!  She also has an exhibit of her needle art at Bristol Art Museum this fall, from September 16 - October 30, 2016.

New in ThinkSpace!

The Museum is committed to providing experiences that promote different types of play and to keeping fresh by frequently changing elements of our exhibits. Investigate two intriguing new drawing stations in ThinkSpace that challenge visitors’ spatial thinking:
  • Mystery Box  Reach inside, feel a hidden object, and draw what it might be. This activity asks visitors to make careful observations using their sense of touch to identify the parts of an object and construct an image of the whole, then to create a drawing – a spatial representation – of what they think is inside the box.
  • Mirrored Image  Draw a picture or write a word so that it looks right-side up in a mirror. This activity encourages visitors to practice their spatial sense through an exploration of symmetry and mirroring.
The Museum exhibits team has a growing practice of prototyping new activities – testing them out with visitors and getting feedback. Exhibit Designer Chris Sancomb created simple, quick and cheap mock-ups of the new drawing activities and Exhibits Director Robin Meisner and Exhibit Developer Jessica Neuwirth tried them out over several sessions with visitors. They observed how visitors used the activities, noted how they interpreted the instructions and labels, and determined whether the activities were at the right challenge level for a variety of ages. After each round of testing, the team made a few changes to see how they affected visitors’ experiences and reactions.

The activities target older children and multiple kid testers talked about how they liked that it was tricky – that they couldn’t do it right away and had to keep trying. And adults were just as engaged as they tried to figure it out for themselves. The exhibits team enjoyed observing how kids naturally helped one another understand how to use each activity.


The team ultimately decided on two versions of the mirrored image activity to give different levels of challenge. They also opted to try out LCD writing tablets instead of using and wasting a lot of paper and are interested to see how visitors respond.

Research shows that spatial thinking is a skill you can improve with practice and the more visitors of all ages try these activities, the better they’ll get!

Snowflakes On Display

New in ThinkSpace, see close-up photographs of the intricate structures of snowflakes by Dr. Kenneth Libbrecht, a professor of physics at California Institute of Technology. Dr. Libbrecht studies the molecular dynamics of crystal growth, particularly how ice crystals grow from water vapor – or the physics of snowflakes. He has experimented with and perfected techniques for catching and photographing snowflakes, and he regularly grows his own designer snowflakes!

The ThinkSpace “geometry gallery” features changing displays of objects that provide strong visual representations of spatial thinking, highlighting shapes in everyday life and the designed environment. Studying snowflakes is a great way to explore their geometric properties and to practice recognizing patterns within shapes, then to classify snowflakes into types. Dr. Libbrecht has identified about 35 types of snowflakes and his photographs allow for the close study of the structure of snowflakes and their geometry.

Mother Goose in ThinkSpace

The “geometry gallery” in ThinkSpace features changing displays of natural and handcrafted objects that provide strong visual representations of spatial thinking, highlighting shapes in everyday life and the designed environment. Discover the newest installation: scenes from favorite Mother Goose rhymes hand-carved from blocks of wood, complemented by colorful images from picture book illustrations.

The pieces are selections from Hey Diddle Diddle!, a larger display created by Dan Elkins and George Alexandre and previously exhibited in the Museum’s atrium walkway and lobby. Elkins and Alexandre were members of The Splinter Group, a local association of retired craftspeople who were active woodcarvers; Dan Elkins also created the circus carvings in the Museum’s stairwell.


“These wood carvings are a great example of spatial thinking because they involve working from 2-D images or illustrations of nursery rhymes and creating 3-D representations,” said Exhibits Director Robin Meisner. “And carving itself involves taking a simple block of wood, envisioning the final product and using a variety of tools to transform that block into a sculpted piece.”

The carvings will be on display for the next few months – take a peek to see Jack jump over a candlestick, a cow jump over the moon, and more!

PlayWatch: Making Tracks

We had a very dedicated visitor who was so fun to watch. He was about 3 years old and I saw him building a line of blocks. He would place one block at a time and once it was set down, he would step back, place his hands on his hips, shake his head, and run to select another piece.

His mom said that he has done this before and is constantly doing similar projects at home. I told her that it was wonderful to watch him plan this because ThinkSpace, the exhibit he was in, is dedicated to spatial thinking and he is demonstrating his own spatial skills. She told me that his goal was to make it all the way down the ramp!

It was also fun because other visitors watched him and were cheering for him. One father even stopped his toddler from destroying it because he was so impressed. As you can see, he made it pretty far before the Museum closed!

Shadow Puppets on Display

The “geometry gallery” in ThinkSpace features changing displays of natural and man-made objects that provide strong visual representations of spatial thinking, highlighting shapes in everyday life and the designed environment.  Discover the newest installation: intricate and colorful Chinese and Indonesian shadow puppets on loan from the collection of Hillary Salmons – executive director of PASA and friend of the Museum – whose family collected the puppets on their travels in the 1980s. The display will be on view through June.


Shadow puppetry, an old tradition in Asia and other parts of the world, is a form of storytelling performed with flat jointed puppet figures made from leather or paper used in conjunction with music and singing.  Puppeteers use rods to move the puppets between a light source and a translucent screen, creating the illusion that the figures are walking, dancing, laughing and more.  The use of color and the way they are cut can reflect different personalities and characters.

“Shadow puppetry is a great example of spatial thinking as it involves changing, manipulating and transforming shapes in space – changing perspective, orientation, scale and more,” said Exhibits Director Robin Meisner.

Inspired by the puppets?  Use the silhouettes and wooden geometric solids in the ThinkSpace shadow box to create a scene and tell your own shadow story!

Blown Glass On Display

The “geometry gallery” in ThinkSpace features changing displays of natural and man-made objects that provide strong visual representations of spatial thinking, highlighting shapes in everyday life and the designed environment. Discover the newest installation by artist Tracy Glover, who is known for her gorgeous glass lighting and decorative accessories. From Tracy’s website
“Her skill is first as expert craftsman, using time-honored Venetian glassblowing techniques. Then there is her color sense: playful, lighthearted, fresh; marrying hues in triplicate for her wonderful a cane striped patterns. She delights in the physicality of the glassmaking process, and the challenge of working with such a malleable, fragile material.”

“Spatial thinking is an intuitive understanding (a sense) of shape and space – it’s about coordinating concepts of shape, representation and reasoning, “ said Exhibits Director Robin Meisner. “The art of glassblowing involves spatial thinking throughout the process: thinking about and transforming shape, color and texture; evaluating and changing size and scale; creating patterns; and more. And the glass beads and their shadows are really lovely to look at!”

The beautiful blown glass beads by Tracy and team will be on view through the end of the year – be sure to take a close look!

Origami on Display

Our ThinkSpace exhibit includes what we refer to as a “geometry gallery,” a case that features a rotating display of natural and manmade objects that provide strong visual representations of spatial thinking, highlighting shapes in everyday life and the designed environment.

Yesterday, the exhibits team took down a display of objects on loan from the Edna Lawrence Nature Lab at RISD and installed a selection of vibrant origami created by Thomas Hull, associate professor of mathematics, Western New England University. Tom described his origami background and process.

What inspired your interest in studying the mathematics of origami?
I started doing origami when I was 8 years old.  Sometime around then, maybe when I was 10, I remember taking an origami crane and carefully unfolding it.  I looked at the network of creases on the unfolded paper that had made the crane and I thought, "There has got to be some math or geometry at work here!"  I had no clue what it was, but ever since then I wanted to figure it out.

Describe the kind of origami you make and the pieces on display.
I like to make geometric origami.  That is, I like to capture interesting geometric shapes and patterns in my paper folding. 

Two of my pieces in the display are made from single (large) sheets of paper.  There is a red piece that outlines a frame of a cube.  That is folded from a large red octagon with many parallel pleats made from the sides to the center.  I used the pleats to collapse the paper, and then I twisted it into the cube shape.  To make the paper stay in this shape, I used an origami technique called "wet folding" where one sprays water on the paper with a fine mister, holds the paper in the desired shape, and lets it dry.  Once dry, the paper will retain the shape.  The other model, made from blue paper, is similar but I started with a hexagon and made different pleats and thus got a different shape in the end.


The other models are all modular origami.  They are made from multiple small pieces of paper that have all been folded in the same way and then locked together, without glue, to make the final shape.  It's a sort of "origami meets Legos" idea that is quite popular.  Instructions for many different modular origami projects can be found on the internet.  Several of my modular origami pieces in this exhibit use "duo-colored paper."  For example, the red and black one uses 60 small squares of paper that are red on one side and black on the other.  The shiny pieces are made from paper that is either gold or silver on one side and red on the other.  I like to try to design modular origami units that show off the paper well and make interesting patterns on the finished object.

Play Watching

If you’ve visited the Museum in the past couple of months, you may have noticed members of the staff with clipboards lurking in the Museum’s newest exhibit, ThinkSpace.  Doing some lurking of my own, I spent nearly 20 minutes watching a very small visitor push big wooden beads along the wire and bead maze, watch them slip down, push them up again.  Twenty minutes – amazing concentration for an 18-month-old.  I tracked a 7-year-old who solved one block-stacking challenge after another, translating abstract drawings into three-dimensional models, and a 9-year-old who was determined to map all of the mystery mazes.  I took notes, timed how long they spent at activities, and listened for spatial language: “Rotate it!”  “I need another parallelogram.”  A mom asked what I was doing.  “Observations,” I told her.


Careful observation is as important to the exhibit creation process as planning, designing, building and installing.  It’s how we know what’s working well, what activities engage kids of what ages, how adults respond, and what we should change.  We expect to be surprised.  No matter how carefully we test prototypes and how much experience we have, kids will do something we didn’t foresee.  And sometimes we know we don’t know, so we might put up a temporary label or try out a series of easily changed activities and see what happens.  We observe systematically for several weeks after opening an exhibit and make adjustments.


But our observation isn’t limited to new exhibits – it’s a constant.  We record and share stories of the power of children’s play in the Museum’s newsletter, on this blog, and on our documentation board in Discovery Studio.  Watching kids at play helps us understand and appreciate their capacity for and ways of learning, and we want our visiting adults to be as delighted by their children’s ingenuity as we are.  That toddler freely exploring cause and effect at the bead maze encountered a perfect learning opportunity, developmentally and physically within his reach.  One child, solving a mystery maze, said each of her steps aloud: “First it goes down, then when I do this it goes that way, and then it goes back and then down…”  Another silently drew his solution.  Different styles, same determination.


Children can navigate social situations as deftly as they solve a maze.  I watched two previously unacquainted kids, ages 6 and 7, working together to assemble seven large, unusually shaped blocks to build a cube.  A Museum play guide supplied well-timed hints, suggesting that they “try rotating it” and offering other clues.  The boys worked diligently, incorporating the hints: “One two three four – that side’s too high!”  “Start again!”  “Rotate!”

Five-year-old sisters of one of the boys joined them and even when the younger ones sat on the blocks and generally got in the way, the boys carried on.  “Give me the yellow,” one ordered his sister, who hopped off the yellow block and handed it to them. After at least four start-overs, they could see the solution.  Some silent understanding developed among them that the little girls would put in the last two pieces.  The last block.  The boys could see exactly how it fit in, but the 5-year-old couldn’t quite get it.  “Rotate,” her brother told her.  She turned it around and slid the final piece into place.  The boys climbed atop their completed cube, arms raised in victory, while everyone cheered.


In a recent blog post, museum planner Jeanne Vergeront suggests there ought to be an app for play spotting, which she describes as  “… pausing and observing children at play.  It is watching them and getting to know them and their thinking through their play.  It is noticing what fascinates them and glimpsing the intensity they invest in play.”

Children take their play seriously.  We learn so much when we take their play seriously, too.

PlayWatch: Block Builders

Two boys, ages 7 and 8, had just met each other in ThinkSpace and were building together with the unit blocks. They started out with a standard “building,” stacking blocks to build arches and paths. I observed and soon asked if I could help, which mostly entailed holding blocks in place for them.

The conversation I had with the boys as they built was very detailed and took many imaginative turns. When I asked one boy what was going to happen next, he told me step by step and prompted me to hold blocks as he did so. “Now, this is going to be the elevator. It works by pulling this lever and moving into this room...” They told me about halfway through that this was the Children's Museum.

This Museum was no easy task, either. Throughout their play, other children would come to the blocks and knock their masterpiece over. The boys waited patiently. Once the children left, they would go right back to rebuilding the Museum, bigger and better than the last one.

Within 20 minutes or so, the two boys had successfully made Providence Children’s Museum – with a face-lift! For the Museum now had 10 floors, an elevator, a slide, a secret passage and a swimming pool.


The final product used every single unit block, and this picture was taken right before a curious toddler knocked down the structure. The boys were okay with this, and they thanked me for the help before they went to explore the rest of ThinkSpace. This was a great way to break in one of the components of this new and exciting space!

PlayWatch: ThinkSpace Stories

These observations of kids’ creative play and focused spatial thinking in ThinkSpace were shared by Museum staff and AmeriCorps members.

Soma Cube
  • Two brothers, ages 11 and 6, played with the Soma cube while their mother observed and told them to “think spatially.”  After the boys found a solution, their mom challenged them to find another one. 
  • A grandmother and a 4-year-old had a great time figuring out the cube: “It took patience but it was so rewarding!”

Mystery Mazes
  • A 6-year-old girl reported that she finished maze boxes 5, 6, 7 and 8 on her last visit and now wanted to do 1, 2, 3 and 4.  She was already on 3 and had lots of erasure marks on her paper from drawing diagrams of the mazes!
  • The mazes were a hit with an 8-year-old boy who really loves drawing; he made good use of the answer keys, comparing them to his diagram and trying again.
  • Devising a creative new challenge, a 7-year-old boy stacked two maze boxes end to end so he could get a ball to travel through both.

Shape Talk
  • A father and daughter took turns being the speaker and listener, laughing and cheering when they got their patterns to match. 
  • Another family – mom, dad and 10-year-old daughter – also traded roles.  The girl built a complex stacked structure and successfully described it so that her dad was able to replicate it.

A Few of Our Favorite Things

Some of our favorite Shape Space activities were kept for ThinkSpace – all of them great spatial thinking tools:

Unit blocks are basic wooden blocks that kids of all ages and grown-ups love to play with. There’s a lot of research that shows their value. They’re completely open-ended. There’s an element of pretend or dramatic play.


Jovo® shapes snap together to make different polyhedra – triangles make a pyramid and squares make a cube. They’re a fantastic manipulative that demonstrates the relationship between the 2-D and 3-D worlds. Kids (and adults!) love to put their creations up on the show-off shelf to share what they've built.


Magna-Tiles® are magnetic and allow little kids to do something similar to Jovos with an easier mechanism for them. They also explore in different ways, stacking or lining them up.


The Shape Talk game prompts visitors to use spatial language, to think about and articulate spatial relations – where something goes in relation to something else.  There’s evidence that spatial language is incredibly important for spatial thinking. Spatial language is not just shape names but it’s also about location – above, below, between. It’s about movement – across, navigate, pathway. It’s about size – big, expand, high, little, long. It’s about orientation – around, down, horizontal. It’s about how things are curved or straight. It’s about congruence – whether something is alike or different or identical or similar. It’s about construction – creating, developing, making, placing. It’s about rotation – flipping, rotating, spinning, twisting. And it’s about transformation – distorting, squishing, transforming.


We’ve already observed a lot of visitors using spatial language and have seen a difference in how Shape Talk is being played in its new formation, and in how the other activities are being used. We look forward to seeing more great spatial play!

ThinkSpace is NOW OPEN!

Our vibrant new ThinkSpace exhibit has opened to rave reviews! We invited a dozen kids, ages 3 to 11, to come in for a sneak peek to test things out for us. Kids of all ages (and their grown-ups!) were intensely engaged in tackling building and design challenges, creating geometric patterns, solving puzzles, exploring shadows, navigating mazes and so much more. We were thrilled by their enthusiasm but also by the depth of their focus and concentration, and we witnessed lots of wonderful collaboration between kids and among adult/child pairs. We can tell that the activities will hold visitors’ attention for a long time, and that they’re going to come up with many interesting challenges of their own.

Some scenes from ThinkSpace...

Stacking, nesting and building with Wedgits – colorful octrahedron and rhombus-shaped blocks. Kids can try replicating designs on our challenge cards or come with their own constructions.
The Soma cube, a giant 3-D puzzle in which seven pieces fit together to form a cube. There are 240 distinct solutions, although it's a challenge to figure out even one – a challenge both kids and adults take very seriously! 
Arranging artfully painted wooden cubes to reproduce patterns or invent new designs.
Exploring the graphics on the navigation column.
Using the senses to guide a ball through the hidden twists and turns of the mystery maze boxes, then trying to map the path it traveled.
Creating intricate kaleidoscopic designs by layering, ordering and rotating colorful cutout shapes in countless combinations.
Experimenting with shadows and scale, transforming 3-D objects into 2-D representations and creating imaginative shadow scenes.
Constructing domino chain reactions, negotiating spacing and alignment to topple series of spirals and zigzags.
Building with wooden unit blocks in our brand-new block building area, designed to inspire even more creative construction.

The Finishing Touches...

We are just about ready to share ThinkSpace with the world! Here's a look at the final steps of the process over the past few days...
Hillel, Zach and Chris install a giant dodecahedron on the entryway sculpture. (You may recognize this scene from a similar photo in The Providence Journal this week.)

It's been months and months of planning, designing, prototyping, fabricating and just plain hard work by the exhibits team, and it was well worth it. Join us to celebrate the opening of our beautiful new ThinkSpace exhibit all weekend long, beginning tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM!

Getting Closer....

ThinkSpace is starting to look like a real (albeit plastic covered) exhibit! Check out some of the progress over the past few days...

Chris prepares panels for the entry sculpture, which is made from over 300 pounds of steel and will stand floor to ceiling when installed – an amazing visual to frame the ThinkSpace entrance.
Chris and Zach construct a sculptural "navigation" column that consists of four colorful stacked octahedra and will house a selection of fun hunts to do throughout the Museum.
X team members couldn't resist leaving their mark in the base of the column before it was built!
Chris and Hillel lay out carved wooden tiles, which will become the backboard of a geometric design activity.
The construction corridor! Hillel and Chris install the carved tiles at right, and the table at the left will be a kaleidoscopic designs station.
Hillel adds image panels to the "lenticular" wall. Once this is fully assembled, it will create an illusion of movement as its two images are viewed from different angles.
